What’s the difference between a water softener and a water filter?
A water softener removes hardness minerals like calcium and magnesium to prevent scale and spots. A water filter, such as a carbon filter or reverse osmosis system, reduces other things in your water, such as chlorine taste and odor or dissolved solids. Many homes use both.
Does a water softener remove chlorine or chloramine?
No. A water softener only removes hardness minerals. To reduce chlorine or chloramine, you need carbon filtration designed for it, often installed alongside the softener.
Why does my tap water taste like chlorine in the spring?
If your city gets water from the North Texas Municipal Water District, it likely switches to chlorine-only disinfection for about a month each spring as routine system maintenance.
